Diarrhea is a disease that can cause death, especially in children. About 10% of
cases of diarrhea in children under five years (toddlers) worldwide are bloody
diarrhea or dysentery. The infant mortality rate in Indonesia due to diarrhea is
around 2.8 million every year. In Indonesia the 2014 diarrhea management
guidelines have provided several choices of antibiotics for diarrhea accompanied
by mucus and blood or dysentery. The recommended antibiotics are cefixime as the
first line, and nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin as the second line. One of the
considerations underlying the administration of antibiotics is the results of the
examination of leukocytes and the patient's body temperature. The relatively high
intensity of use of antibiotics causes various problems and is a global threat to
health, especially bacterial resistance to antibiotics. The purpose of this study was
to determine the factors for selecting antibiotics for cases of diarrhea in children
at Clinic X, Mojokerto Regency in May 2021. This study was a qualitative
descriptive study with data collection by interview and using purposive sampling
technique. The study was conducted by interviewing medical personnel or doctors
who provide drug therapy at Clinic X for the period of May 2021. In this study,
several factors or considerations underlie the administration of antibiotics, namely
the type of diarrhea, the bacteria that cause diarrhea, the patient's condition, the
mechanism of action and the spectrum of antibiotics. , side effects of antibiotics.
